Brunswick County, N.C. — A state tolling analysis shows the proposed Carolina Bays Parkway Extension into Brunswick County would not generate enough traffic or revenue to reduce the project’s nearly $800 million construction cost. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority reviewed three route scenarios and found that projected toll income would cover only routine maintenance, not major expenses.
The project, which would create a new connection between North Carolina and South Carolina, has faced strong public opposition over cost, traffic, and environmental concerns. With tolling ruled out as a viable funding option, transportation officials must now consider alternatives such as bonds, sales taxes, or state appropriations. Construction is expected to begin in 2028, with phased openings projected for 2035 and 2040.
