Department begins phased operations June 1 as rapid population growth drives expansion; district changes expected later this summer
SUNSET HARBOR, NC — The Sunset Harbor & Zion Hill Volunteer Fire Department has placed its new Clemmons Road fire station into service, marking a major step in expanding coverage for one of Brunswick County’s fastest‑growing areas. While the station is still being fully set up, June 1 is the official staffing date for the new facility.
Firefighters will continue responding from the existing Sunset Harbor Road station as well. Both locations will operate with a combination of paid personnel and volunteers during the transition period, ensuring dual‑station coverage as the department adjusts to rising call volume.
The expansion comes as the Sunset Harbor and Zion Hill communities experience sustained population growth, driven by new neighborhoods, increased year‑round residency, and seasonal influxes. Department leaders say the additional station is necessary to reduce response times, improve coverage across the widening service area, and maintain the level of protection expected from a modern combination department.
The new station also aligns with the department’s long‑term planning efforts highlighted in BC News’ earlier report on its evolution from a rural volunteer outfit to a modern lifeline for the community. An official opening ceremony and community open house will be scheduled once the Clemmons Road station is fully operational. The new station is located directly beside the entrance to Horse Play Farms in the 1700 block of Clemmons Road SE.
The department noted that updated district boundaries are not yet active. The new district is expected to take effect later this summer, possibly in July. Additional updates will be shared as details are finalized.
