K9 Taro and Dep. Andrew Nichter help locate suspect tied to multiple vehicle break‑ins and a stolen truck.
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit helped locate a vehicle breaking and entering suspect following a multi‑scene search on May 25, 2026.
Deputy Andrew Nichter and K9 Taro responded after reports of a vehicle break‑in, where deputies discovered that several vehicles in the neighborhood had been targeted. A witness reported seeing the suspect run behind nearby homes, and Dep. Nichter deployed K9 Taro from the last known point of sight.
While trailing, K9 Taro located a set of keys and a hat believed to belong to the suspect. After an extended track, Taro was given a brief rest while a second K9 continued the trail.
At the same time, a perimeter unit spotted a truck speeding away from the area. The driver ran a red light, refused to stop, and eventually bailed from the vehicle after turning down a dead‑end road. Dep. Nichter arrived moments later and redeployed K9 Taro from the driver’s side door of the abandoned truck.
The North Carolina K9 Team tracked through thick brush, wooded areas, and residential backyards. Deputies ahead of the team heard sticks breaking in the wood line and issued K9 warnings. The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
Investigators later confirmed the truck had been stolen from the same neighborhood where the vehicle break‑ins occurred.
