911 call and public videos prompt investigation into rare “mini‑supercell”
DELCO, NC — The National Weather Service in Wilmington says a storm survey team will be in the Delco Reiglewood community today, Sunday May 10, to investigate a possible tornado that struck Columbus County on Saturday.
The first alert came through Columbus County 911, where a caller reported a funnel touching down near Old Stage Road.
Emergency management relayed the report to the National Weather Service. Soon after, multiple public videos surfaced showing what appeared to be a narrow, rotating column extending from a compact storm.
Forecasters described the system as an unusual “mini‑supercell” – a storm only about 25,000 feet tall that never produced lightning, yet still showed the structure capable of generating a tornado. Several structures in the Delco area were damaged, but no injuries were reported, according to Columbus County Emergency Management.
NWS survey teams will document the damage, determine whether a tornado touched down, and assign an EF rating if confirmed. Findings are typically released later the same day.
