Steep‑slope MVC tests training, coordination, and response speed
Incident Update: HWY 87 East — Riegelwood Section
By BCNews Staff Writer
ADR crews responded to a single‑vehicle motor‑vehicle crash on HWY 87 North in the Riegelwood section of the district. The incident required a strong multi‑agency response, bringing together resources from Acme Delco Riegelwood Fire, Buckhead Fire, Carvers Creek Fire, East Arcadia Fire, and Bladen EMS.
The scene presented a significant challenge due to a steep slope, which complicated both patient access and extrication. Crews relied heavily on their technical rescue training, and that preparation proved essential in overcoming the terrain.
A guiding principle was evident throughout the operation:
“When you practice until you can’t get it wrong, you’ll do it right when it counts.”
Despite multiple departments on scene – each with its own identity, heritage, and culture – every team knew its role. Tasks were executed cleanly, efficiently, and without hesitation. From the arrival of the first unit to the patient being accessed, treated, and safely extricated to the roadway, only nine minutes elapsed.
Different patches. Different apparatus. One mission. When the tones drop, every agency shares the same goal: delivering fast, professional help when it matters most.
This operation demonstrated the best of what multi‑agency cooperation can achieve: fast action, skilled execution, and a unified focus on protecting the public. It’s the kind of teamwork that defines our region’s emergency responders and the standard they bring to every call.
