County officials say clearer understanding of curbside setup can help prevent missed collections.
Brunswick County Government is reminding GFL Environmental curbside trash and recycling customers to follow proper cart‑placement guidelines, noting that some residents may benefit from a clearer understanding of how to position their containers to ensure safe, efficient collection.
GFL Environmental shared updated best practices this week, emphasizing that correct placement helps protect equipment, prevents service delays, and reduces the chance of missed pickups. Customers with questions about their collection day or service can contact GFL Environmental at 910.253.4177, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

According to the county, carts should be placed at the curb with the wheels facing the home and the lid opening toward the street. Wheels should rest directly against the curb. Garbage and recycling carts should be spaced at least four feet apart and kept four feet or more from mailboxes, vehicles, lamp posts, power lines, or other obstacles that could interfere with the truck’s mechanical arm.
Residents are encouraged to leave their carts at the curb until the end of the day if they have not yet been collected, as pickup times can vary. Setting carts out the night before collection is generally recommended to avoid missed service if trucks arrive earlier than expected.
The county also notes that some neighborhoods with homeowners’ associations may have specific rules regarding when carts can be placed at the curb. Residents are encouraged to review their HOA bylaws to ensure compliance.
