City event brings NOAA, Red Cross, and local agencies together for storm‑season readiness
By BC News Staff Writer
Southport, NC — The Southport Fire Department will host a Hurricane Expo on Saturday, June 1, at the Southport Community Building, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event is designed to help our established and new residents prepare for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season with guidance from federal, medical, and local emergency partners.
The event is free and open to the public
The expo will feature representatives from NOAA, Dosher Memorial Hospital, the American Red Cross, and multiple City of Southport departments. Attendees will receive information on storm tracking, evacuation planning, generator and electrical safety, debris removal, EMS considerations, and post‑storm recovery procedures.
Attendees will receive guidance on assembling emergency kits, protecting important documents, planning family communication strategies, and staying informed through the city’s official emergency information channels.
City officials note that hurricane‑season forecasts vary this year, with some models suggesting reduced activity due to El Niño while others point to elevated risk driven by unusually warm Atlantic waters. Emergency managers emphasize that even below‑average seasons can produce damaging storms, making early preparation essential for coastal communities.
