Calabash Moves Toward Financing Property Purchase for Future Town Facilities

Calabash, NC — The town of Calabash, long known for operating debt‑free, has taken its first formal step toward entering a financing agreement to purchase property needed for long‑term government facility expansion.

During the June 9, 2026 meeting, commissioners adopted a resolution authorizing the town to begin the process of securing a debt obligation to buy a six‑acre parcel at 8840 Old Georgetown Road SW, located within Calabash’s jurisdiction near Sunset Beach.

Town officials say the move is driven by necessity. Calabash’s staff currently work in the town’s original Town Hall, a building constructed in 1985 that is now overcrowded, outdated, and unable to meet operational needs. The Old Georgetown Road property is being considered for future government use, including potential administrative, public safety, and community service facilities.

Jayne A., speaking in support of the decision, said, “This appears to me to be a significant win for the Town of Calabash, as it positions itself strategically for the future. This proactive approach not only serves the community in the present but also prepares the town to effectively address future challenges.”

The proposed purchase marks a significant shift for Calabash, which has maintained a debt‑free status for years.

The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners is expected to take up Calabash’s request for financing approval during its July 7, 2026 meeting. That discussion will determine whether the town may proceed with the debt obligation required to complete the property acquisition.
