Free June 17 screening at Horry County Museum highlights the life and work of the Edgefield artist.
The Horry County Museum will continue its 2026 Documentary Film Series with a free screening of Discovering Dave, Spirit Captured in Clay on Wednesday, June 17, at 1:00 p.m. The film will be shown at the museum’s Main Street location in Conway.
Directed and produced by George Wingard and Mark Albertin, the documentary was released through the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program and Scrapbook Video.
It examines the life of David Drake, an enslaved potter from Edgefield, South Carolina, whose signed jars and pitchers remain among the most distinctive artifacts of the 19th century. Drake produced thousands of pieces and is also remembered for inscribing original poetry on some of his works, an uncommon and courageous act for an enslaved man of his time.

The Horry County Museum and the L.W. Paul Living History Farm will be closed Friday through Monday, June 19 through June 22, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.
