Agency directs filers to IRS.gov for faster, 24/7 self‑service tools as call volumes surge.
The IRS is urging taxpayers to skip long phone waits during the busy Presidents Day week and instead use IRS.gov for faster, around‑the‑clock self‑service help. Presidents Day is one of the heaviest calls‑volume periods of the filing season, but most common questions – from transcripts to refund status can be handled online without waiting on hold.
Taxpayers can access records, manage authorizations, request an IP PIN, and make or schedule payments through an IRS Individual Online Account. Electronic filing with direct deposit remains the quickest and safest way to receive refunds, and the IRS continues its transition to fully electronic federal payments under Executive Order 14247. Free File and Free File Fillable Forms offer no‑cost options for eligible filers, while the Interactive Tax Assistant provides guidance on filing status, income, and credit eligibility. Qualified taxpayers can also receive free basic return preparation through VITA and TCE programs.
For Brunswick and Columbus County residents, the IRS notes that while many taxpayers may see larger refunds this year due to recent federal tax law changes, refund processing times are not expected to be faster.
Most electronically filed returns with direct deposit still follow the standard 21‑day timeline. Refunds can be tracked through Where’s My Refund? which updates daily and provides status information within 24 hours of an accepted e‑filed return. Most early EITC and ACTC filers should see updated status by February 21.
The IRS emphasizes that IRS.gov remains the fastest, easiest first stop for assistance throughout the filing season.
