Firefighters Rescue Two Pets as Multi-Agency Effort Controls Kitchen and Attic Fire
Calabash, NC — Aggressive interior tactics and a swift response from local emergency crews are being credited with saving a home and two family pets following a residential structure fire in Calabash earlier today.
Calabash Engine 1 arrived on the scene in just over 5 minutes to find heavy smoke pouring from the roof and attic of the residence. Firefighters immediately launched an interior attack, tracing the fire’s origin to the kitchen. Before crews arrived, the flames had already begun to extend upward into the attic space. Firefighters worked to pull ceilings and apply water rapidly to intercept the fire, a move officials say was critical in stopping the spread to the rest of the structure.
The response required extensive mutual aid from across the region. Units from Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Horry County Fire Rescue, and Brunswick County EMS all converged on the scene.
Under the coordination of additional command staff from Ocean Isle Beach and Horry County, the fire was brought under control in 25 minutes. During the operation, the Calabash Traffic Operations Team maintained a secure perimeter, blocking traffic to ensure a safe workspace for the dozens of responders involved. While the home sustained damage, there were no injuries reported among occupants or emergency personnel.
Firefighters successfully located and rescued a dog and a feline from the residence during the suppression efforts.
To ensure the community remained protected during the incident, the Grissettown Longwood Fire Department moved into the district to cover two additional calls while Calabash units were occupied.
