Mariah Thompson, 15, of Whiteville, was one of two young people killed early Monday morning in Roanoke Rapids, nearly three hours from home. Police responded to gunfire at the intersection of Vance Street and West 11th Street, where Mariah and 19‑year‑old Patrick Shane Faircloth both died at the scene.
Mariah’s death has deeply affected her school community. As her teacher, Susan Baldwin shared, “Mariah was one of many students I have had the pleasure of teaching, and I have also taught her mom and siblings. We just talked about her getting older one of the last days of school.” She added, “This is one of many losses I have experienced through the years, but losing someone so young is especially difficult.”
Mariah was known for her warmth, her smile, and her unmistakable personality. Her teacher remembered, “I can still hear her voice saying, ‘But Ms. Baldwin,’ and then smiling.” She continued, “My teacher and mama heart aches for my students who are missing Mariah right now.”
Her family was not prepared for the sudden financial burden of funeral expenses. This fundraiser has been created to help provide Mariah with a dignified and beautiful going‑home service. As her teacher explained, “When someone so young passes, it is hard to be prepared to pay for their final resting, and this is where we are today.”
If any funds remain after funeral costs, they will be used to support Mariah’s younger siblings with school fees, supplies, and other needs for the upcoming school year. “When loss occurs, it is hard enough, but the days after when life goes on and children return to school being prepared will help prevent added sadness in the days ahead.”
