Three New Substations and Headquarters Expansion Spearhead Multi-County Infrastructure Initiative
By BC News Staff Writer
SUPPLY, NC – As southeastern North Carolina continues to experience record-breaking residential and commercial development, Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC) is launching a series of strategic infrastructure projects designed to meet increasing energy demands. The expansion plan includes the construction of three new substations and a significant overhaul of the cooperative’s headquarters facility.
A Decade of Unprecedented Growth – The move comes as BEMC manages a surge in membership that reflects the region’s booming population. According to official records, the cooperative now serves 90,000 members across its four-county service area. Thats an increase of 20,000 members since 2014. To maintain service reliability and prepare for future load requirements, BEMC is prioritizing “growth and demand” as the cornerstone of its current capital improvement strategy.
Strategic Infrastructure Expansion – The centerpiece of the reliability initiative is the addition of three new substations strategically positioned to alleviate pressure on the existing grid:
- Brunswick County: Two new substations will be constructed to support the high-density growth corridors within the county.
- Columbus County: One new substation is planned to bolster service and provide localized grid stability.
Headquarters and Coastal Reliability
Further north in Supply, BEMC is currently expanding the existing electrical substation located at its headquarters at 795 Ocean Highway. This project is specifically designed to improve transmission capabilities and provides essential backup support for the coastal community of Holden Beach.
By enhancing the distribution provisions at this central hub, the cooperative aims to provide improved backup capability, ensuring that if one section of the grid faces an interruption, power can be rerouted more efficiently.
Strengthening Localized Hubs – The infrastructure roadmap also includes critical upgrades to the Shallotte substation. These improvements are intended to provide a more resilient “loop” in the system, offering enhanced redundancy for one of the region’s busiest commercial and residential centers.
These investments represent BEMC’s long-term commitment to providing reliable, affordable power to the 90,000 homes and businesses it serves throughout the Carolinas.
