WHITEVILLE — A Columbus Correctional Institution inmate with a long history of violent infractions is facing a new charge after authorities say he attacked a corrections officer during an incident inside the state prison system.
ALFONSO “SWEET” LEWIS, 35, has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the assault, which left Corrections Officer A. Lynch hospitalized, according to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction.
The attack occurred Saturday inside Columbus Correctional Institution. Officials said Officer Lynch was injured during the assault and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The department reported that Lynch is expected to recover.
Following the incident, Lewis was immediately transferred to Granville Correctional Institution, the state’s highest‑security facility, where inmates with significant disciplinary histories are housed.
Extensive Prison Record
State records show Lewis has accumulated numerous infractions during his incarceration, including:
- Assaulting staff
- Possession of a weapon
- Fighting
- Participation in a riot
- Selling medication
- Gambling
Lewis is currently serving time for a 2010 first‑degree murder conviction out of Gaston County. That case involved a fatal shooting tied to a drug‑related dispute.
Investigation Ongoing
The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is leading the criminal investigation into the assault. Additional details about what led to the attack have not been released.
Lewis remains in state custody. All individuals charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
