City of Whiteville, NC — Whiteville Police officers recorded 76 traffic violations and enforcement actions while participating in the Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s “Move Over” Traffic Campaign, held May 11–17, 2026.

According to the department, enforcement during the weeklong initiative resulted in:

– 2 DWI arrests
– 4 wanted fugitives captured
– 15 charges for Driving While License Revoked
– 10 speeding citations
– Additional violations making up the remainder of the 76 total enforcement actions

The Move Over campaign is part of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s annual enforcement calendar, coordinated with local agencies across North Carolina. GHSP, led by Director Mark Ezzell, oversees statewide traffic‑safety initiatives and partners with police departments, sheriff’s offices, and highway patrol units to reduce crashes and protect roadside responders.

North Carolina’s Move Over law requires drivers to slow down and change lanes when approaching law enforcement, EMS, fire personnel, tow operators, and other emergency or utility vehicles stopped on the roadside with flashing lights. Violations carry a minimum $250 fine plus court costs.
