Tank removal follows water intrusion; site carries prior contamination restrictions
By BCNews Staff Writer
Brunswick County, NC — The owner of the Minuteman 45/Marathon station on Holden Beach Road in Supply scheduled the removal of four underground storage tanks which started the week of February 9, 2026, according to a UST‑3 Notice of Intent filed with the NC Division of Waste Management.
The action follows a site check indicating water intrusion through a tank’s strike plate, prompting the decision to permanently close the tank system by removal. Geological Resources, Inc. is listed as the contractor overseeing the closure.
The property has a documented history of petroleum releases, including Incident #43104, which resulted in a Notice of Residual Petroleum restricting soil and groundwater use. That incident, along with a second case (#49825), received No Further Action status in 2024, though the land‑use restrictions remain in place. State rules require a full site assessment during tank removal to determine whether any new release has occurred.
The filing does not indicate that the gas station itself is closing. The UST‑3 applies only to the underground tank system, and no documentation submitted to the state shows a permanent business closure. BC News will continue to follow updates as closure activities progress.
