Highway Patrol says the teen failed to slow as Bus 67 made its first afternoon stop on U.S. 701.

Williams Township, NC — A Williams Township School bus carrying students’ home, the afternoon of Monday, May 18 was struck from behind by a pickup truck, according to the NC State Highway Patrol. No injuries were reported among the children or staff on board.

The crash happened around 3:09 p.m. on US 701, just south of the school, as Bus 67 slowed to make its first scheduled stop. Troopers say the pickup’s driver, described only as a teen failed to reduce speed and hit the rear of the bus.

Emergency crews from Williams Township Fire Department, Whiteville Rescue, Columbus County EMS, and the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office responded. Students were evaluated at the scene, and all were released to continue home on the bus or with guardians.

Trooper Sgt. Mark Gore confirmed the teen driver has been charged, though Highway Patrol has not released the driver’s name. Because the driver is a juvenile, identifying information is not expected to be made public unless charges are elevated to adult court.

The bus sustained rear‑end damage, and the pickup was towed from the scene. Highway Patrol is completing its collision report, which will outline contributing factors and any additional citations. No further updates have been issued.
