BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC —  Motorists traveling through Brunswick County are facing significant delays today, July 17, 2026, following the emergency closure of U.S. Highway 17. The closure, necessitated by an active gas leak in the area, has prompted law enforcement and transit officials to implement immediate traffic diversions to ensure public safety.

Crews are currently on-site working to contain the leak and stabilize the area. As a result, commuters are being redirected through local corridors, and drivers should expect heavy congestion throughout the afternoon.

Detour Routes Established

Authorities have issued the following guidance for those navigating around the closure:

For Southbound Travel: Drivers approaching from Mako Road or already traveling southbound on U.S. 17 are advised to exit and follow the marked detour via Old Town Creek Road, turning onto Town Creek Road. The route continues through Crab Apple Road and Cherry Tree Road, connecting to Bell Swamp Road before returning to U.S. 17.

For Northbound Travel: The path for northbound traffic depends on your current proximity to the site:

  • Approaching the NC 87/George II Highway intersection: Motorists should utilize Mill Creek Road, merging onto George II Highway and continuing through Funston Road.

  • Past the Handee Hugo’s area: Traffic is being diverted onto NC 87, connecting to Funston Road and then Dall Creek River Road.

Safety and Cooperation

Officials emphasize that safety is the top priority during this emergency response. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously, remain alert for emergency vehicles and traffic control personnel, and strictly adhere to all posted signage.

Local authorities appreciate the public’s patience while crews work to secure the site. Updates will be provided as conditions change and the highway reopens to normal traffic flow.
