Myrtle Beach Police say one round was fired; no injuries reported as investigation continues.

Myrtle Beach, SC — Myrtle Beach Police responded Monday evening to the 1300 block of Ragin Street after a ShotSpotter alert indicated possible gunfire in the area. Officers arrived at approximately 6:30 p.m. and began canvassing the neighborhood as part of their initial investigation.

According to police, preliminary findings show that one round was fired, and no injuries have been reported. Several individuals were detained at the scene, though authorities have not released details regarding the number of detentions or whether any charges are expected.

The department noted that residents may see an increased police presence in the area as officers continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

As part of the incident response, police also reiterated how ShotSpotter technology functions. The system uses a network of acoustic sensors placed around the city to detect impulsive sounds that resemble gunfire. When sensors triangulate a likely gunshot, the system sends an automated alert to officers within seconds, providing a mapped location to help guide the initial response. While the technology is designed to speed up investigations and identify gunfire that might not be reported to 911, it has also drawn national scrutiny over accuracy and false positives, particularly in dense neighborhoods where fireworks or engine backfires can mimic gunshot signatures.

Anyone with information about Monday’s incident is asked to contact the Myrtle Beach Police Department’s non‑emergency line at 843.918.1382 and reference report number 26‑010276.
