Drivers should expect lane shifts, new markings, and work‑zone changes between June 7–11.
HORRY COUNTY, NC — The Highway 501 widening project is moving into a more visible stage this month, with construction crews shaping the new outside lanes between Gardner Lacy Road and SC 544 in both directions.
County officials say the fresh pavement drivers now see is not the final surface. Additional layers will be added later in the project as work progresses through the summer.
In the coming weeks, intermediate surfacing is also scheduled at several major intersections along the corridor, including:
• Cox Ferry Road • University Boulevard • Singleton Ridge Road • Century Circle • Burning Ridge Road • Wild Wing Boulevard
The South Carolina Department of Transportation reports that traffic‑switch operations are planned between June 7 and June 11. That work will include removing old pavement markings, applying new striping, and adjusting traffic‑signal heads to match the shifting traffic pattern.
As the project advances, crews will begin installing median drainage and removing asphalt at crossovers slated for permanent closure. During this phase, the current inside lanes will close, and traffic will shift onto the newly constructed outside lanes.
Drivers are urged to follow all posted work‑zone signs, reduce speed, and use caution while traveling through the construction area.
