The Southeast is currently navigating a severe environmental emergency as record-breaking drought conditions fuel massive wildfires and hazardous air quality across Georgia and the Carolinas.

Wildfire & Air Quality Emergency

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has declared a State of Emergency for 91 Georgia counties as fire crews battle the region’s largest blazes.

  • Pineland Road Fire (Clinch County): Approximately 29,600 acres burned with only 10% containment.
  • Highway 82 Fire (Brantley County): Over 5,000 acres burned; mandatory evacuations remain in place.
  • Air Quality Alerts: Smoke plumes from Georgia are drifting across South Carolina and into North Carolina, triggering “Unhealthy” and “Orange” alert levels for fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

Historic Drought Scores

The region is enduring its driest September – March period since records began in 1895.

  • North Carolina: 100% of the state is in drought, with 40 counties designated as natural disaster areas.
  • South Carolina: 99.34% coverage, with extreme soil moisture deficits impacting regional agriculture.
  • Georgia: 98.13% coverage, featuring “Exceptional” drought categories in the southern tier.

Outlook for Relief

Q: Is there any idea when any of these states will get relief from significant rain?

A: Short-Term (April 23–30): No significant relief expected. High pressure continues to dominate, maintaining dry conditions and high fire risk across GA, SC, and NC. Current forecasts indicate a potential pattern shift in early May, though a rainfall deficit of 6″ to 9″ remain across the region.
