Brunswick County deputies say an 18‑year‑old brought a firearm onto educational property on June 2; few details about the incident have been released.
SHALLOTTE, NC — An 18‑year‑old has been charged with bringing a gun onto school property in Shallotte, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies arrested Jonathan Maltez Rivera, 18, on June 2 and charged him with possession of a firearm on educational property, a felony under North Carolina law. The statute carries mandatory jail time upon conviction, even for first‑time offenders.
Authorities have not released additional details about the incident, including whether the firearm was loaded, where on campus it was found, or whether any threats were made. The Sheriff’s Office also did not say whether the school was placed on lockdown or if any students or staff were involved.
Maltez Rivera was booked into the Brunswick County Detention Center and later released after posting bond, according to the sheriff’s office.
As of Wednesday, no further information has been provided by deputies or the school district. Court records for the case have not yet appeared in the state’s online system, which often lags behind new filings.
The investigation remains ongoing.
