Cyber tip about possible school violence led investigators to a coercive group known as “764.”
Horry County, SC — The Horry County Sheriff’s Office is warning parents about a dangerous online trend after deputies arrested a 16‑year‑old linked to a violent digital network that targets minors through extortion.
The case began when deputies received a cyber tip from the gaming platform Discord involving possible school violence. Investigators contacted the FBI’s Columbia Field Office, and the joint inquiry uncovered exploitation tied to an online group known as “764.”
Federal authorities issued a Public Service Announcement in 2025 describing “764” as a network that preys on minors and other vulnerable individuals. Members use threats, blackmail, and manipulation to force victims into producing or livestreaming acts of self‑harm, animal cruelty, sexually explicit conduct, or suicide. The material is then shared among members, who often threaten to release it publicly or send it to the victim’s family to maintain control.
Deputies identified a local 16‑year‑old student involved in the exchanges and took them into custody.
“This is one of the most disturbing cases I’ve seen in my eight years as a child sex crimes investigator. The ages of the defendant and the victim, and the material generated as a result of extortion was both extreme and unsettling,” said Lt. Tim Troxell.
The FBI reports that victims are typically between 10 and 17 years old, with children experiencing mental health challenges, including depression and eating disorders at heightened risk.
The Sheriff’s Office urges parents to stay aware of their children’s online activity, use parental controls, and monitor the apps and platforms their children access. Officials also encourage parents to start a conversation if they notice their child communicating with someone unfamiliar.
