Rural Communities and Public Health Event

Interactive exhibit at Penn’s Grill Restaurant invites residents to share stories, experiences, and challenges

A community gathering at Penn’s Grill Restaurant later this month will invite Columbus County residents to reflect on the everyday realities that shape public health in rural communities. The event, hosted by local partners and Narrative Arts, centers on an interactive media exhibit built from a recent Community Story Circle held in the county.

Organizers say the evening is designed to be informal and welcoming a space where neighbors can come together, listen to one another, and learn from the lived experiences that often go unheard. The exhibit highlights stories of resilience, daily challenges, and the factors that influence well‑being far beyond traditional health care.

Public health, they note, includes transportation access, food availability, mental health support, and the quiet stress many people carry. It also reflects whether residents feel safe, supported, and connected in their own communities. The event aims to spark conversation around these themes by elevating the voices of those living them.

The gathering will take place Thursday, February 26, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Penn’s Grill Restaurant, located at 128 E Commerce St. in Whiteville. Food and refreshments will be provided, and attendees are welcome to drop in briefly or stay for the full program.
Organizers emphasize that every presence matters whether someone comes with a friend, with questions, or simply with an open heart. The goal is to strengthen community understanding one conversation at a time.
