Swimming Advisory Lifted for Cottage Creek Site in Southport

NC DEQ’s Division of Water Resources

State environmental officials have lifted the swimming advisory for the public kayak launch at Cottage Creek in Southport after new testing confirmed bacteria levels had returned to within state and federal standards.

The advisory was first issued on June 11 after routine samples collected on June 9 and June 10 showed elevated enterococci levels.

Follow‑up samples taken on June 16 showed bacteria levels had dropped below the 104 enterococci per 100 milliliters action threshold for Tier 2 non‑daily use sites. With the water now meeting both state and EPA recreational standards, officials removed the warning signs and reopened the site for normal use.

No further restrictions are in place.
