Meritorious Service Ribbons Presented for Leadership and Swift Action During 2025 Mass Shooting
Southport, NC — Southport Police Department Chief Todd Coring joined Senior Chief Logan Adkisson, his family, friends, and colleagues Thursday for a retirement luncheon at the Southport Community Building, recognizing the Coast Guard veteran’s decades of service to coastal communities.
Chief Coring praised Senior Chief Adkisson’s leadership, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to public safety, noting the strong friendship and partnership shared between the Southport Police Department and the longtime Coast Guard leader. He extended his gratitude and warmest wishes as Adkisson enters a well‑earned retirement.
During the ceremony, held in the presence of Senior Chief Adkisson’s family, Coast Guard personnel, and invited guests, Chief Coring presented him with the Southport Police Department’s Meritorious Service Ribbon. The honor recognizes Adkisson’s exceptional leadership during the September 27, 2025, mass shooting in Southport, where his actions played a critical role in the coordinated emergency response.

Chief Coring also presented Meritorious Service Ribbons to the crew of the United States Coast Guard vessel whose rapid response led to the location and detention of the suspect within approximately one hour of the shooting. Their swift action, professionalism, and commitment to protecting the public were credited with helping bring a dangerous incident to a safe conclusion.
The Southport Police Department expressed its sincere appreciation to Senior Chief Adkisson and the dedicated men and women of the United States Coast Guard for their outstanding service and steadfast partnership in safeguarding the community.
