BC News Brief: Brunswick County Commissioners Take Stand on Local Control

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners met on Monday, April 6, to address a range of administrative reports and public hearings, focusing heavily on protecting local regulatory authority against proposed state-level changes.

The Board moved to formally oppose several state legislative efforts that could impact county operations:

  • Property Tax Autonomy: In a 3-2 vote, the Board approved a letter to state legislators opposing limits on local governments’ ability to regulate their own property tax (ad valorem) rates. Commissioners Cooke, Sykes, and Thompson voted in favor, while Commissioners Forte and Williams voted against.

  • Downzoning Restrictions: Staff was directed to draft a letter reiterating the Board’s opposition to state legislation that would restrict the county’s ability to perform downzoning.

  • Land Clearing Regulations: The Board is seeking the authority to regulate open burning during land clearing activities. A formal request to the General Assembly is being drafted for review later this month.

Public Housing & Administrative Updates

  • Annual Public Hearing: The Board conducted its annual hearing for the Public Housing Agency. While the floor was open for comments on goals and objectives, no residents requested to speak, and no further action was required.

  • Debris Burning: Discussions continued regarding the Solid Waste Ordinance, with staff providing options for regulating the onsite burning of debris.

The Board of Commissioners will reconvene for their next meeting on Monday, April 20, at 6:00 p.m., where they are expected to review the drafted legislative letters.
