Contractor to work between Singleton Swash and Apache Pier; some beach access closures expected
HORRY COUNTY, SC — A locally funded beach renourishment project is now underway in the Arcadian Shores area, according to Horry County Government. The work is being completed through a partnership between Horry County and the City of Myrtle Beach.
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock (GLDD), the contractor for the project, will be operating between Singleton Swash and Apache Pier over the next several days. During active construction, small sections of beach and individual public access points will temporarily close as equipment moves through the area. All other sections of beach outside the work zone will remain open to the public.
Once GLDD completes the Arcadian Shores portion, crews will return to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) federal renourishment project in southern Myrtle Beach, known as Reach 2. Work in Garden City and Surfside Beach (Reach 3) is scheduled to follow later in the summer.
“The contractor’s current plan is to complete both projects before the peak of hurricane season,” said Andrew Markunas, Horry County Engineer. Officials note that the schedule may shift based on weather conditions or equipment availability.
Both the local and federal projects include daily monitoring for sea turtles and migratory shorebirds. If a nest is identified within an active construction area, work will pause until protective measures are in place or relocation can occur if necessary.
Residents can track daily progress of the federal USACE project using the agency’s interactive online map at https://arcg.is/1bbrfr3. The tracker does not include updates for the locally funded Arcadian Shores work.
