More than 7,000 Horry Electric members saw service return Sunday night; outage not tied to holiday demand.

LITTLE RIVER, SC — Power was fully restored around 9:30 p.m. Sunday after crews from Horry Electric Cooperative, Inc. and Santee Cooper replaced a damaged component at the Brooksville substation.

Horry Electric reported that transmission was lost at the substation around 7:30 p.m., triggering widespread outages across Little River, Longs, and parts of Calabash.

More than 7,000 members were affected as multiple circuits fed by the Brooksville site went offline.

Crews from both utilities were dispatched shortly after the outage began and worked to identify the failed equipment. Repairs were completed the same evening, allowing service to be restored to all impacted members. Horry Electric thanked its field teams and Santee Cooper’s transmission crews for their coordinated response and quick restoration efforts.

The cooperative has not reported any customer complaints related to the outage and said there is no indication the failure was connected to increased holiday‑weekend electricity demand. The loss of service stemmed from a single equipment issue, not system overload. While the Little River and Longs areas continue to experience rapid residential and commercial growth, Horry Electric noted no signs that development pressures or capacity strain contributed to the incident. Major substation‑level failures remain uncommon in the region, with most outages typically tied to storms, accidents, or isolated equipment problems.
