Coastal Carolina emergency services gain new tool to protect vulnerable residents during extreme heat and storm recovery efforts
As hurricane season approaches and summer temperatures begin to climb, a new public safety tool is now available to help protect neighbors across the coastal Carolinas. The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons has officially launched the Missing Endangered Weather Alert, a specialized notification system designed to mobilize the community when a person goes missing during dangerous environmental conditions.
For local families in Brunswick, Columbus, and Horry counties, this alert fills a critical gap in emergency response. Unlike traditional missing person reports, this alert is specifically triggered when someone on foot is exposed to life-threatening heat, defined by a heat index of 100°F or higher—or extreme cold reaching freezing temperatures.
It also provides a vital safeguard for individuals who may become unaccounted for immediately following major coastal storms or flooding events.
Local law enforcement agencies throughout our region will now have the ability to push these urgent notifications directly to area mobile phones via the Wireless Emergency Alerts system. By getting the word out to residents quickly, officials hope to reduce the time it takes to locate those most vulnerable to the elements. Families who need to report a missing loved under these circumstances should contact their local police or sheriff’s department immediately to begin the verification process.
