Southeastern Community College leaders spent Tuesday morning celebrating Read Across America Week with students at Edgewood Elementary, using stories, conversation, and encouragement to highlight the importance of reading and lifelong learning.
SCC Leaders Visit Edgewood Elementary for Read Across America
As part of Read Across America Week and in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Southeastern Community College leadership visited Edgewood Elementary School on March 3 to serve as guest readers and engage students in discussions about education, confidence, and curiosity.
SCC President Dr. Chris English, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Brandon Jenkins, and Vice President of Administrative Services and Chief Operating Officer Ibreta Jackson each read to third‑grade classrooms, sharing stories that connected literacy with personal growth and future opportunities.
Stories That Sparked Conversation
Each SCC leader selected a book that opened the door to deeper conversations with students:
- Dr. Chris English read Curious George Goes to the Aquarium, using the story to talk about setting goals and the importance of encouragement at a young age. He emphasized that early exposure to reading helps students imagine their futures.
“To engage our young people in college and what we have to offer, but also to encourage them in their academic careers,” he said.
- Dr. Brandon Jenkins chose Little Prickles, a story about embracing who you are. He spoke with students about confidence, self‑acceptance, and how reading builds a strong foundation for learning.
“Teaching these kids a love of reading in second and third grade instills lifelong learning,” Jenkins said.
- Mrs. Ibreta Jackson read Speak Up, Molly Lou Melon, sharing that her favorite part of the visit was seeing students’ excitement and eagerness to participate.
Students Share What They Love About School
Throughout the morning, students asked questions, shared their thoughts, and talked about their favorite subjects. When Dr. English asked what they enjoyed most about school, students in multiple classrooms gave the same answer: their teacher. The moment underscored the powerful role educators play in shaping confidence, curiosity, and academic success.
Supporting Future Educators
Southeastern Community College highlighted that visits like this reflect the college’s commitment to preparing future teachers through its Teacher Preparation program, which focuses on literacy, child development, and community‑centered education. SCC leaders said they hope experiences like Read Across America inspire students to see education as a lifelong journey.
A Celebration of Reading and Community
SCC expressed gratitude to Edgewood Elementary for the invitation and for the opportunity to celebrate Read Across America Week alongside the educators who make a lasting impact every day.
