A joint scholarship from Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation and Electric Cooperatives of the Carolinas is helping expand the region’s pipeline of future electrical lineworkers, strengthening both the local workforce and the reliability of the power grid.

BEMC and ECE Fund New Lineworker Scholarship for Local Students

Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC), in partnership with Electric Cooperatives of the Carolinas (ECE), has awarded $5,000 in scholarship funding to support students entering electrical lineworker training programs at Brunswick Community College and Southeastern Community College. Each college will receive $2,500 to assist students with tuition, equipment, and required safety gear.

The scholarship is part of a broader effort by North Carolina’s electric cooperatives to prepare the next generation of lineworkers—an essential profession that keeps homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure connected.

Supporting a High‑Demand Career

Lineworkers are responsible for building, maintaining, and repairing the electric grid, often working in challenging conditions and during severe weather. As coastal and rural communities continue to grow, the need for trained utility workers has increased.

The scholarship helps reduce financial barriers for students entering programs that teach:

  • Electrical distribution systems
  • Pole climbing and safety procedures
  • Storm response and outage restoration
  • Equipment operation and field teamwork

Both BCC and SCC operate hands‑on academies designed to prepare graduates for immediate employment with utility companies, contractors, and cooperatives.

Strengthening Local Workforce Development

BEMC’s investment reflects its long‑standing commitment to education and community development. The cooperative already supports local students through its annual Scholarship Highway program, and the new lineworker scholarship expands that mission into workforce training.

ECE’s participation underscores the statewide push to build a strong, homegrown workforce capable of supporting North Carolina’s energy needs for decades to come.

Opening Doors for Future Lineworkers

With the cost of lineworker training often reaching several thousand dollars, the BEMC/ECE scholarship provides meaningful support for students who may otherwise struggle to afford the program. The funding helps ensure that more residents of Brunswick, Columbus, and surrounding counties can pursue a stable, high‑wage career in the utility industry.
