LELAND, NC — A Brunswick County man faces multiple charges after police say he fled from officers on an electric dirt bike, committed numerous traffic violations, and assaulted an officer during his arrest Tuesday.
Leland Police reported the incident began around 5:00 p.m. on July 14 near Ocean Gate Plaza and New Pointe Boulevard, where officers with the Special Operations Unit attempted a traffic stop after observing several violations. The rider refused to stop, drove on the sidewalk, and failed to obey stop signs.
Officers discontinued the initial stop due to safety concerns.
A short time later, officers located the same electric dirt bike and attempted a second stop. Police say the rider complied but resisted arrest and assaulted an officer as they took him into custody.
The rider, identified as Dominic Bradford, 28, was charged with flee to elude arrest, assault on a government official, resisting a public officer, reckless driving, operating without a license or motorcycle endorsement, and multiple equipment and registration violations. Additional charges include failure to stop at a red light, failure to yield at a stop sign, driving the wrong way, sidewalk violation, no helmet, no inspection, and several motorcycle lighting and mirror violations.
Bradford is being held at the Brunswick County Detention Center under a $12,500.00 secured bond.
Police noted the electric dirt bike involved has a peak output of 5,500 watts and a top speed of about 52 mph. Under North Carolina law, any vehicle capable of exceeding 30 mph does not qualify as an electric‑assisted bicycle and must meet motorcycle requirements under Chapter 20, including licensing, registration, insurance, and required safety equipment.
The department reminds riders that high‑powered electric dirt bikes operated on public streets are subject to the same laws as motorcycles.
