Brunswick County Commissioners Granted Expanded Development Authority Under New State Law

New legislation shifts final decision-making power for local projects, streamlining the development approval process across the county

BRUNSWICK COUNTY,  NC — The North Carolina General Assembly has officially enacted new legislation that provides the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners with expanded authority over development decisions within the county.

House Bill 1222, which was ratified and signed into law as Session Law 2026-30 on July 2, 2026, modifies the application of state planning and development regulations.

By adjusting specific sections of Chapter 160D of the North Carolina General Statutes, the law solidifies the Board of Commissioners’ role in rendering final determinations on development proposals, a move intended to provide clearer oversight and local control over the county’s infrastructure and land-use evolution.

The bill moved through the legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support. On July 1, the North Carolina House of Representatives voted unanimously 114-0 to concur with Senate amendments, following a successful 49-0 vote in the Senate on June 30.

The implementation of this law marks a significant shift in the procedural framework for local zoning and development approvals.

Residents and stakeholders interested in the specific administrative changes and how they may influence future project timelines can review the full text of the ratified legislation through the North Carolina General Assembly’s official records.
