Lawsuit says Myrtle Beach hotel failed to provide security during armed robbery
By Coastal Carolina News Staff Writer
Myrtle Beach, SC — A contractor who was shot during an armed robbery at the Sleep Inn Myrtle Beach is accusing the hotel’s owners of failing to provide basic security for visitors, guests, and workers, according to a lawsuit filed July 13, 2026.
Howard Lamar Vereen had been completing repair work at the hotel on Jan. 30, 2025, when two people returned to the property after previously being removed and attempted to rob the manager. One suspect opened fire, hitting Vereen in the shoulder as he ran toward his vehicle.
The complaint says the hotel offered no security presence, failed to warn people on site about dangerous activity, and operated in what the suit describes as a high‑crime area, leaving Vereen vulnerable to the violence that unfolded.
