WHITEVILLE — Southeastern Community College student Samuel Sibbett has been selected as SCC’s recipient of the 2026 North Carolina Community College System Academic Excellence Award, one of the highest academic honors given across the state’s 58 community colleges.
The award recognizes one outstanding student from each institution for exceptional academic performance, leadership, and commitment to learning.
Sibbett, 57, has maintained a 4.0 GPA while balancing a full course load and a part‑time job at a local car dealership. College officials described him as a disciplined, focused student whose work ethic sets a strong example for peers.
Sibbett began earning college credits while still in high school through SCC’s Career & College Promise program. He completed his Associate in Business Administration in 2025 and is now pursuing an Associate of Arts degree with plans to transfer to a four‑year university to major in accounting.
He credits repetition, reading, and visual learning as key study strategies.
“I like to read and memorize what I’m studying in my head,” Sibbett said.
His part‑time job has allowed him to apply classroom concepts in real business settings, including updating financial records and managing inventory lists. He also said support from family members — especially his aunt Tanya Clark and cousin Hannah Clark — helped him stay organized and on track.
One of his proudest moments at SCC was being selected as a Marshal for graduation, a recognition of academic achievement and leadership.
After completing his bachelor’s degree, Sibbett hopes to pursue a career in business or finance and use his skills to support nonprofit organizations and strengthen the community through responsible financial stewardship.
SCC leaders said Sibbett’s recognition reflects the college’s commitment to academic excellence and student success.
