North Carolina travelers who arrive at the airport without an acceptable form of identification will soon face a new fee. Beginning February 1, 2026, the Transportation Security Administration will charge $45.00 for passengers who need to use TSA ConfirmID, the agency’s updated identity‑verification system.
The fee applies to anyone who cannot present a REAL ID‑compliant license, passport, or other federally approved ID. ConfirmID verification is valid for 10 days, covering most round‑trip travel, but may add extra time at security checkpoints.
The change is expected to affect many North Carolina flyers, as a significant number of residents still hold standard licenses that are not REAL ID‑compliant.
DMV offices across the state—including those in Brunswick and Columbus counties—continue to report high demand for REAL ID appointments.
A REAL ID license includes a gold star in the upper right corner. Cards marked “Not for Federal Identification” will not be accepted at airport security after February 1.
State officials urge travelers to update their ID well before their next flight to avoid delays and additional costs.
