Fire Crews Respond to Blaze at Sawmill Apartments in Whiteville

Multiple departments battle afternoon fire on W. Hay Street

WHITEVILLE, NC — Fire crews from Whiteville and surrounding departments responded Saturday afternoon to a structure fire at the Sawmill Apartments complex on West Hay Street. Heavy black smoke was visible from U.S. 701 and Madison Street as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

The fire was reported around 3:30 p.m., according to early dispatch information. Several units in the complex were evacuated while crews from Whiteville, Lake Waccamaw, Brunswick, and other mutual‑aid departments operated on scene.

No injuries or damage estimates have been released.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
