Town officials remind visitors to follow digging rules after an oversized hole required heavy equipment to safely fill in
SUNSET BEACH, NC — Sunset Beach officials remind visitors to follow local digging rules after crews had to use a backhoe to fill in an unusually large hole recently left on the beach strand.
“The hole was dug in the middle of the night, then discovered by our early morning Code Compliance personnel” said Sunset Beach PD. “The Code Compliance personnel were unable to safely fill it in by hand. Public Works responded with heavy equipment to level the area”
Large holes can create hazards for late‑night walkers, emergency personnel operating vehicles on the strand, and sea turtles coming ashore to nest. Officials noted that deep depressions are difficult to see at night and can quickly become dangerous.
Town ordinance § 95.06 requires that any hole dug on the beach strand be attended at all times and filled in before leaving, but no later than 7:00 p.m. The ordinance also limits holes, trenches, and depressions to no more than 18″ deep by 5 feet wide, and prohibits metal shovels.
