SOUTHPORT — Planning is officially underway for what organizers say will be one of the most significant North Carolina 4th of July Festivals in recent memory. The festival’s Board and Committee held their first meetings of 2026 on January 20, gathering dozens of volunteers to begin fine‑tuning preparations for this year’s expanded celebration.

The 2026 festival carries special meaning as the nation marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Southport, which has documented Independence Day celebrations dating back to 1795, will also observe its 231st consecutive year of festivities.

This year’s event will run from June 26 through July 4, with activities scheduled across both Southport and Oak Island. Organizers say the week‑long celebration will blend long‑standing traditions with new additions — and even revive a few events from the past. The festival typically draws around 50,000 visitors each year.

Popular Southport attractions will return, including the fireman’s competition, naturalization ceremony, arts and crafts on Bay Street, children’s activities at Taylor Field, veterans recognition events, a horse show, regional art show, military exhibits, food vendors, live music, a 5K and 1‑mile run, a petting zoo, and pro wrestling matches. Fireworks displays are planned for both Southport and Oak Island, along with a celebratory flotilla on the waterfront.

Southport Fire Department will once again host the World’s Largest Ice Cream Sundae, and organizers confirmed the return of a long‑awaited scholarship pageant. The festival’s main Waterfront Stage will move back to its traditional location behind Whittler’s Bench at the end of Howe Street, while groups such as the 440th Army Band will perform on the Fort Johnston Garrison Lawn.

Festival Chairman Hugh Fosbury said the enthusiasm surrounding this year’s planning is “remarkable,” noting that volunteers have been working on the 2026 celebration since late last summer. “We have dozens of people putting countless hours into making this year a vibrant and amazing celebration of America’s 250th,” Fosbury said.

He emphasized that the festival is made possible through the support of sponsors, volunteers, nonprofit partners, and city and county staff. “The entire community shows year after year what the 4th of July is all about,” he said.

Event schedules, updates, and sponsorship information — including details on the annual Shrimperoo Fundraiser set for April 12 at American Fish Company — will be posted at www.nc4thofjuly.com as plans are finalized.
