A fatal collision along US 74-76 west of Whiteville claimed one life early Sunday morning, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
Troopers say the crash occurred just before 2 a.m. between the Union Valley exit and the Peacock Road overpass, when one vehicle was struck from behind. The driver of the rear-ended vehicle died at the scene. The other driver was injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Although it was raining at the time of the crash, investigators say weather conditions did not contribute to the incident.
The names of those involved have not been released. The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
