Leland Unveils Proposed $50 Million Budget for 2026–27 Fiscal Year

Town of Leland

LELAND — The Town of Leland has released its proposed budget for fiscal year 2026–2027, outlining a $50 million spending plan that lowers the property tax rate while investing in public safety, infrastructure, and community services.

Town Manager staff formally presented the proposal to Town Council on Feb. 19. The budget is built around five strategic priorities: maintaining a safe community, strengthening infrastructure and environmental resilience, improving communication and engagement, supporting organizational excellence, and enhancing business and neighborhood development.

The plan includes a two‑cent tax rate reduction, dropping from 27 cents to 25 cents per $100 of property value.

Several major investments are included in the proposal:

  • $2.5 million for road resurfacing, continuing the town’s 20‑year cycle to repave 5% of streets each year
  • $750,000 in emergency contingency funding
  • New public safety positions, including two police officers for the Traffic Division, three firefighters, and one fire captain
  • New general government positions, including an IT analyst to support public safety technology, two grounds maintenance technicians for Founders Park and beautification efforts, and one facilities technician
  • $250,000 for the Pedestrian Infrastructure capital project fund

Town officials say the budget aims to balance growth‑related demands with long‑term financial responsibility.

Residents will have two opportunities to learn more and provide input. A Budget Q&A Forum is scheduled for March 9 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall, where staff will give a brief presentation before taking questions from attendees. A formal public hearing will follow during the March 19 Regular Council Meeting, also at 6 p.m.

The town has published all budget materials, along with a question‑submission form, at townofleland.com/budget27.
