Bystander gives ultimate sacrifice after pulling young girl from treacherous surf near 10th Avenue South.
MYRTLE BEACH, SC — A Friday evening beach visit along the Grand Strand ended in heartbreak after a bystander gave their life to pull a young swimmer away from a dangerous undertow.
According to local law enforcement, emergency services received reports just before dark, around 7:53 p.m., regarding an emergency in the surf near 10th Avenue South. A young girl had drifted into a severe rip current and was struggling against the heavy pull of the ocean.
Noticing the child was in grave danger, a bystander waded out into the surf to intervene. The rescuer successfully brought the minor back to the shallows out of harm’s way, but the ferocious waves and undertow dragged the Good Samaritan under the surface.
Local officials confirmed that professional lifeguard towers were already unmanned for the evening when the crisis unfolded.
Personnel from the police and fire departments rushed to the coastline, deploying boats and search teams into the night. Operations resumed early the next morning, and according to Captain Jon Evans with the fire department, search crews recovered the individual after the lifeless body drifted ashore.
Law enforcement officials have withheld the name of the deceased rescuer while family notifications are underway.
Investigators have not reported any hospitalizations for the child who was brought to safety. Public safety leaders continue to advise visitors to exercise extreme caution near coastal waters, noting that strong undertows can develop rapidly and pose extreme risks, particularly outside of regular lifeguard coverage hours.
