Case closed after evidence review confirms lawful self‑defense under state statutes.

After reviewing all the evidence, the District Attorney’s Office has closed its investigation into the January 2 death of Dylan Hennessey in Leland, determining the homeowner acted in lawful self‑defense under North Carolina’s Stand Your Ground and Castle Doctrine statutes.

Under N.C. General Statute § 14‑51.3, individuals have no duty to retreat when they are lawfully present and may use force if they reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent death, serious injury, or a forcible felony. N.C. General Statute § 14‑51.2 also presumes justified self‑defense when someone unlawfully and forcibly enters a home, workplace, or vehicle.

With the investigation complete, no criminal charges will be filed.
