David Michael Fleenor, 80, of Oak Island NC, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026, with his loving wife by his side.
Born in Washington, DC, Dave spent his youth on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and summers with beloved cousins on the family farm in Abingdon, VA. Dave learned early the value of honest labor, community, and the simple joys of life. At 18, Dave proudly enlisted in the United States Navy. While serving, he was stationed in Spain where he purchased his VW Volkswagen which would return to the states with him upon discharge. After his honorable service, Dave began a 30-year career with the phone company in Northern Virginia, where he forged many lifelong friendships.
In time, Dave found the love of his life, Kathy, and for 35 beautiful years they built a life together by the sea on Oak Island. His days were filled with time spent talking and laughing with friends and neighbors. Dave often served as the unofficial “welcoming committee”, greeting newcomers as “Mayor Dave” and lending a helping hand. He was a founding member of the Cape Fear Cruisers, proudly restoring his 1932 Ford Model A to its former glory with help from his buddy, Arnold. He and Kathy were devoted volunteers at local car shows for many years, greeting visitors, sharing stories, and helping keep the community’s love for classic cars alive.
Dave’s passions reflected his adventurous and down-to-earth spirit. He loved casting a line on quiet mornings, the thrill of a motorcycle ride along the coast, and afternoons at the gun range with friends. Dave’s life was a journey of service, love, and friendship. His memory will forever ride alongside those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Strom; his children, Cathy Raynor, David Fleenor Jr, Abby O’Brien, Kirk Todd, and Jill Brackins; his 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Katherine Fleenor; and daughter, Tracey Keller.
A celebration of Dave’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 7, 2026 in the Peacock – Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel. Dave will be laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico.
