Joint training highlights expanded readiness across Brunswick County waterways
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has expanded its marine response capabilities with a new Munson 34-foot PackMan Landing Craft, now in service after months of training by the Marine Patrol Unit and volunteers.
The welded aluminum, high‑speed vessel enhances rescue, firefighting, and recovery operations across the ICW and coastal communities. Key features include a 1,000 GPM fire pump, bow‑mounted fire monitor, advanced sonar, Garmin radar, FLIR, a lowering bow door for rescues, a 500‑pound davit, patient bench seating, twin 300 Yamaha engines, and dive bottle racks to support extended missions with the BCSO Dive Team.

Purchased through a port security grant, the vessel has already supported multi‑agency training. Over three days, departments from across Brunswick County completed hands‑on instruction led by BCSO personnel and a Munson representative, including operating the vessel underway and using its firefighting systems.
Participating agencies included St. James, Southport, Oak Island, Tri‑Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, and Sunset Beach fire departments, along with BCSO Volunteer FTOs.
The joint training strengthens regional readiness and supports coordinated response during waterway emergencies.
