Ocean Isle Beach Police urge families to buckle up children riding in golf carts

Department reminds visitors that North Carolina child‑safety seat laws apply to all LSVs on the island.

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC — With summer traffic picking up across the island, the Ocean Isle Beach Police Department is reminding families that seatbelts and proper child restraints are required in all low‑speed vehicles (LSVs), including golf carts.

Officers say they enjoy seeing families explore the island by cart, but too many young passengers are being spotted riding unsafely — squeezed between adults, sharing seats, or sitting on someone’s lap. Police stress that if a child wouldn’t ride that way in a car, they shouldn’t ride that way in an LSV either.

North Carolina’s child‑restraint laws apply to golf carts the same as passenger vehicles. That means:

  • Children 8 years old or younger OR weighing less than 80 pounds must be secured in an appropriate child‑restraint system.
  • Every rider must have their own seat and seatbelt – no laps, no sharing, no exceptions.

The department says the goal is simple: keep families safe while they enjoy the island. Ensuring every passenger is properly seated and buckled before the cart moves is the first step.
