Firefighters and EMS personnel say the pause leaves a critical gap in required training

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC– Brunswick Community College has paused its EMS education program, a move that caught students and first responders off guard.

The pause follows the non‑renewal of EMS Program Director Chip Munna’s contract. Munna held the advanced instructor credentials required by the North Carolina Office of EMS, which mandates a qualified director to oversee advanced‑level training. Without one, the program cannot operate under state rules.

The shutdown affects more than new EMT and paramedic students. Firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics across Brunswick County rely on BCC for continuing‑education hours needed to maintain their certifications. The sudden shutdown has created an immediate need for alternative training options so responders can stay on track with required credentials.

The college has not said why Munna’s contract was not renewed. Officials confirmed only that the program is temporarily paused and that efforts are underway to bring it back into compliance.

BCC said it remains committed to providing high‑quality EMS education and is working to restore the program as quickly as possible.

Local departments hope the interruption is brief, noting that reliable access to EMS training is essential for staffing and emergency readiness countywide.
