A Three‑Run Inning That Changed Everything

After a scoreless start, Whiteville broke the game open in the third inning, loading the bases before senior Layton McLean and freshman Wyatt Torelli delivered key at‑bats that pushed three runs across. The burst of offense proved to be the difference in a tight, defensive championship matchup.

East Rutherford answered with two runs in the sixth, but Whiteville’s pitching and infield defense shut the door in the final frame.

McLean Brothers Lead the Way

The championship series showcased the strength of Whiteville’s pitching staff — particularly the McLean brothers.

  • Senior Layton McLean started Game 3, controlling the early innings and earning the win in his final high‑school appearance.
  • Freshman Luke McLean, who threw a complete‑game, nine‑strikeout performance in Game 1, returned in relief Saturday to close out the title‑clinching victory.

Luke’s dominance in Game 1 set the tone for the series, and his late‑game composure in Game 3 helped secure the championship.

Series Recap

  • Game 1: Whiteville 4, East Rutherford 1 — Luke McLean complete game, 9 strikeouts
  • Game 2: East Rutherford 5, Whiteville 4 — Cavaliers rally to force Game 3
  • Game 3: Whiteville 3, East Rutherford 2 — Wolfpack hold off late push to win title

A Legacy That Keeps Growing

The victory adds to a storied tradition that includes multiple championships across classifications. Whiteville’s combination of pitching depth, defensive consistency, and postseason experience once again proved decisive.

Head coach and staff credited the team’s resilience, noting that the Wolfpack won four elimination games during the playoff run.

Community Pride on Full Display

Fans traveled in large numbers to Burlington, filling the stands with blue and white and erupting as the final out was recorded. For many, the win felt like a continuation of a baseball culture that has defined Whiteville athletics for decades.

The Wolfpack return home as state champions once again — a familiar title, but one the community never takes for granted.
