Permitted land‑clearing burn expected to generate visible smoke along Highway 17
CALABASH, NC — Calabash Fire Department is advising residents and motorists that a permitted land‑clearing burn on Thomasboro Road near Highway 17 is expected to produce noticeable smoke throughout the day.
According to the department, the NC Forest Service notified firefighters this morning that a burn permit had been issued to a company clearing land in the area. Because no signage has been posted along Highway 17 to alert drivers, officials anticipate multiple reports of a brush or woods fire as smoke drifts toward nearby roadways and neighborhoods.
Firefighters have already responded once to the site since the burn was ignited. While crews are aware of the source of the smoke, they will continue responding to any reported incidents in case an unrelated emergency occurs nearby.
The advisory covers the area between Thomasboro Road, Pea Landing Road, and Brunswick Plantation. Officials say residents may see smoke but should only call 9-1-1 if they observe flames outside the designated burn area, rapidly changing conditions, or anything that appears to pose an immediate threat.
